Oodlies Illustrations: Inspired by @hstrykid @ksuyin @danportnoy @josiecampbell @DrJared
Hi @hstrykid @ksuyin @danportnoy @josiecampbell @DrJared,
If you've not had a look at my Oodlies blog before its where I post most days, as I must sketch these Oodlie things all day to help lessen the illusion of groundhog day. I recently put up a website for Oodlies www.oodlies.com I'm not sure why, but I'm sure I'll find out at some point.
I've been following Les (@hstrykid) for a while ... I've never really spoken to him until this week. He tweeted about liking the Squirrel Nut Zippers, a band I am absolutely obsessed with. Obsessed as in I could listen to them all day and I've illustrated them for years. So I @replied him and what followed was an insane week of exchanging music. I had to literally log myself out of twitter ... as I had some scintillating logos to design and I couldn't have @hstrykid temp me with more music. Every time he @replied me I felt my head was about to explode, as there was all this music I hadn't heard of before and he was like my personal DJ who knew exactly what I liked, it was so overwhelming, in the best way ever. As it turned out, he was just as obsessed as I was with music. Les had a birthday this week, Happy Birthday again Les. He also added me as a friend on FB which I gratefully accepted, its was probably the first time I added a 'twitter follower' on facebook.
I have this weird thing about facebook, it's like I think its so personal and I've only ever added friends I've met and family to facebook but I've changed that attitude. For starters, I'm just a really simple person I have nothing to hide, you'll see a bunch of dorky photos people have tagged of me on facebook and my wall is just filled with Oodlies, that's about it. I like tagging people to my oodlies on facebook and making the occasional comment on someone's wall.
Then there's @ksuyin (Su Yin) who is absolutely obsessed with her vege garden and bicycles. I really dig that and follow her solely based on that, I'd be disappointed if she started tweeting about Social Media heavily. Ask to see the flickr set of her vege garden, fascinating! She's like this really useful sort of person so I wanted to sketch her something useful. For Christmas, Su Yin I'm sending you two gifts. 1) a Bicycle that will be solely powered by your amazing green fingers and 2) A Bicycle that will be powered by a peking duck you can eat when you're tired from all that riding.
Dan (@danportnoy) I've retweeted him a few times and really he's very useful on twitter, always sharing. Then one day he added me on facebook just saying "been following you for a while so" and I remembered Oh yeah this Dan dude has been pretty useful, I friended him back right away as I'd already friended @hstrykid and by now was over the whole facebook is personal thing.. thing. I looked at Dan's hilarious photos, and video of his baby (update: his nephew not baby .. then I felt I wanted to say something. But I didn't quite know what to say, so on his wall I wrote "hello non twitter Dan"
I really like facebook Dan.
@josiecambell wrote a beautiful blog for her friends about coping with sadness http://josiecampbell.posterous.com/blog-sadness she wrote it on the same day I was playing around this blog entry -my">http://joidesign.posterous.com/oodlies-illustrations-cancer-you-can-lick-my. I tweeted/Dm'ed Josie for a bit and she's not just a good writer, she's a pretty cool person, so I've resisted oodling her as Josie and the pussycats.
Then @DrJared retweeted Josie's mention of my blog. And I decided to check his profile and blog out : http://jarednoel.wordpress.com/.
The Boredom Blog - when chemotherapy gives you too much time on your hands .. I've read his entire blog, he's a good writer. @DrJared is in pretty bad shape - cancer. We've exchanged some dark humour tweets, like me telling him when my dad died I pretty much lost it for a year and decided to use humour to cope. If someone said "sorry to hear about your dad" I'd say "Why did you do it?" and they'd of course get very uncomfortable but that was 5 years ago, I can't use childish, shock factor humour now (@drjared's reply was "well you need to find something else now" :)
You can't get a dummies guide to cope with death, but I think his blog may help if you're in a situation right now wondering why the hell there weren't classes to deal with death in school, surely that would have been pretty useful.
He has a very relaxed, natural, freaking talented way of writing. So hurry up and read his blog now, as you never know ... yeah bad taste joke, but I have a feeling he'd find that funny :) http://jarednoel.wordpress.com/. When you don't really know someone, you can offer them humour more than comfort (which boils down to the same thing at times), well mostly. See you on twitter @DrJared I've subscribed to your blog.
Update: 9/12/09 - Listen to Jared's thoughts in an interview here http://rhema.co.nz/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=...
Here are some of my favourite tunes from the Squirell Nut Zippers and what @hstrykid enjoys too, have a good weekend.
